[I haven't been r.s.d. regularly for a long time now, so if this has already been discussed, I appologize for bringing it up again]
Just out of curiosity, did anyone know that adidas is printing and
selling Ultimate discs? (they come complete with the fundamental
How-To's of the game on the back) Does anyone know how this happened?
(did someone at the UPA push for this or did they do it on their own?)
Has this been happening for a long time?
To check out the adidas design, go to: http://thestore.adidas.com/ and search for "Ultimate Frisbee"
If anyone has info on how a major global atheltics equipment manufacturer/retailer has commenced printing Ultimate discs, I'd love a little insight.
Also, does anyone have an opinion on this as a marketing issue for the sport, the UPA, and/or Wham-O, Discraft, etc.? ...does this bode well for the future of the sport or not?
...again, just very, very curious.

Sure enough - I just did a search and up popped the disc with the product description below.
Seems like most Ultimate players resist the notion of marketing Ultimate and as a result it's growth over 3 decades has been good but not great. On the other hand, Rick Conner has been very successful growing Goaltimate in a very short period of time because of his marketing skills.
From the adidas site:
Ultimate 2000 Disc $10.00
Ultimate regulation disc. 3-Stripe detail appears in center during flight. Molded plastic. Weight: 175 gm. Size: 11" diameter. For the serious Ultimate player or any player seeking serious fun.

In article <3A5226B9.F533DE0E@...>,
My housemate has an adidas disc. It seems pretty cheap (there is a
noticable seam from the mold at the bottom edge of the rim). Flies OK,
although I've only thrown it across his bedroom.
The rules of Ultimate description on the back is pretty funny: "Pass the
Adidas Ultimate Disc (tm) to your team mate to score," etc. Sure beats
that confusing assed proposed 10th ed.

I saw the Adidas disc in a store this past
weekend and was surprised myself. I'm notorious
for wearing Adidas gear, so I thought it would be
a great addition. Unfortunately, I picked the
thing up and it was a major disappointment. It
is 175g, but it feels about as cheap as those
promo "discs" that banks give to you for opening
up an account. I wouldn't recommend trying to
play a game with it. The descriptions are
amusing though. As far as the fact that Adidas
has even bothered to attempt to make a regulation
size disc, I'm impressed. Don't know if it's
good or bad for the sport, but perhaps some
goofball will pick it up, read the description
and realize that the game we all love isn't "that
thing I see people doing in the park with their
dogs."

One of my students bought one in November at a local sporting goods store. I
thought you all might enjoy some of the blurbs from the cardboard jacket:
ULTIMATE DISC: Field game of strategy, requiring precise passing between
teammates into their designated "end zone".
For people of all ages, levels, skills & abilities to throw with accuracy &
distance. Unique molded construction. Features a comfortable gripping
surface. Soft outer rim. Stable flight pattern. Can be used in any
playing conditions. Designed according to specifications of the sport of
Ultimate.
OBJECT: To score a goal by passing the adidas Ultimate Disc to a teammate
postitioned inside the end zone. Rumored to be a non-contact sport.
Players cannot move in any direction while in possession of adidas Ultimate
Disc. Player in possession of adidas Ultimate Disc may pivot with one foot
remaining in contact with ground. One guard allowed per thrower.
Possession gained through interception or out of bounds pass by defensive
team.
(And my personal favorite):
CAUTION: Any thrown object can cause injury.

Always alert catcher when disc is thrown.
